Laburnum
This project presents the thoughtful extension and refurbishment of a classic Victorian terraced house, creating in a beautifully modernised home that retains its historical charm.
The property was extended at the rear, with a side infill extension, enhancing the existing space which had been underutilised due to a previously constructed, full-width rear extension. This modest strategic addition allowed for the creation of a much larger kitchen and dining area, offering expansive views of the garden and transforming the heart of the home into a bright, open space ideal for both everyday living and entertaining.
The kitchen design is centered around a sleek, long wall layout, with a central feature island serving as the focal point of the space. This modern, efficient design is complemented by custom bookcases and shelves built into the alcoves, maintaining a clean and cohesive aesthetic throughout the property.
Interior design plays a pivotal role in this project, where a modern contrasting theme was chosen to breathe new life into the Victorian structure. Bold, contrasting colours such as red, brown, and burnt orange are paired with neutral light tones to create a vibrant yet harmonious atmosphere. This approach involved careful consideration of complementary colours, using dark and light shades to add depth and interest to each room. A mix of materials further enhances the texture and contrast, contributing to the overall sense of style and sophistication.
The bedrooms, while primarily in neutral colours, feature contrasting details that add character without overwhelming the space. Despite the project’s very small budget, we’ve been able to successfully achieved a high-end look by opting for simple, timeless finishes and cost-effective materials that do not sacrifice quality or style.
This project demonstrates how a careful balance of modern design and thoughtful restoration can revitalise a historic property, making it both functional and visually appealing. The minimal disruption during construction ensured that the home’s original features were preserved, while the new extension and interior design elements bring the property into the present day.
